Tradition and Creativity Unite: A Tour of the "Showen Kumihimo" Factory in Kyoto-Uji

Located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, "Showen Kumihimo" is known for its traditional kumihimo manufacturing techniques infused with innovative creativity. We recently had the opportunity to visit their manufacturing facility and gain insights into their production process.

Within the factory, the process begins with the use of silk and synthetic fibers for the kumihimo strands. Silk, known for its soft and supple texture, remains a favored material for traditional kumihimo. The yarn undergoes a unique dyeing process, resulting in a vibrant array of colors ready for the next step.

Next, the yarn bundles are meticulously arranged. Adjusting the number of threads and colors to match the desired thickness, pattern, and length of the kumihimo, artisans carefully bundle the threads while envisioning the final product. This stage is crucial as it significantly influences the quality of the kumihimo.

Following this, the bundled yarn is mounted onto machines for braiding. The factory boasts a variety of machines, each capable of producing different braiding styles and patterns. Artisans select the appropriate machine, set the threads, and commence braiding. This harmonization of traditional techniques and modern machinery allows for efficient production.

The kumihimo produced in the factory is then processed to suit various purposes. From traditional items like obijime and haori-himo to newer accessories like keychains and coasters, a wide range of products is created. Artisans continuously explore new ideas, blending tradition with creativity to develop innovative products.

Additionally, "Showen Kumihimo" has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1948. Initially catering to the demand for traditional obijime, the company adapted to changing times under the guidance of its first president. Embracing tradition while pursuing new ideas, "Showen Kumihimo" evolved into a company known for its diverse product range.

Our visit to the factory left us in awe of the beauty and craftsmanship embodied in "Showen Kumihimo" products. We eagerly anticipate the future development of this company, where tradition and creativity continue to thrive.

伝統の技と創造性が息づく

― 京都・宇治の「昇苑くみひも」

「昇苑くみひも」は京都府宇治市に構え、伝統的なくみひも製造の技術を受け継ぎながらも、新たな創造性を取り入れた製品を提供していることで知られています。この度、同社の製造工房を訪れ、その製造工程について見学してきました。

工場内では、まず絹糸や化学繊維の糸を使用します。絹糸は柔らかくしなやかな質感であり、くみひもの伝統的な素材として重宝されています。そして、独自の染色技術によって、色彩豊かな糸が生み出されます。工場内で染色された糸は、次の工程に向けて準備が整います。

次に、糸の束を組む作業が行われます。この工程では、組み上げるくみひもの太さや柄、長さに応じて、糸の本数や色を調節しながら束にしていきます。作業者は仕上がりをイメージしながら、一本ひとつ丁寧に糸を束ねていきます。この工程がくみひもの品質を左右する重要な段階とされています。

その後、束になった糸を機械に取り付けて組み上げていきます。工場内にはさまざまな種類の機械が並び、それぞれが異なる組み方やパターンを生み出すことができます。作業者は機械を選択し、糸をセットして組み上げていきます。この工程では、伝統の技術と機械の効率を組み合わせることで、効率的に製品を生産することが可能です。

工場内で製造されたくみひもは、さまざまな用途に合わせて加工されます。帯締めや羽織紐などの伝統的な用途から、アクセサリーやキーホルダーなどの新しいアイテムまで、幅広い製品が生み出されています。作業者たちは常に新しいアイデアを模索し、伝統の技術と創造性を融合させながら製品を開発しています。

さらに、昇苑くみひもは創業以来、日本のくみひも産業の発展に寄与してきた歴史があります。1948年に創業した当初は、和装の帯締めとしての需要が主でしたが、時代の変化とともに需要が減少しました。しかし、初代社長は伝統を守りつつ、新たなアイデアに取り組むことで事業の存続を図りました。その結果、昇苑くみひもは伝統的な製品だけでなく、多彩なアイテムを開発する企業として成長してきました。
